It’s Not All Bad News
It’s been an interesting week in the news and for a change some of it is good news. Recently, the trial of Dwayne “Lee” Johnson v. Monsanto awarded the plaintiff, Lee Johnson $289 million in damages ($250 million in punitive damages). During the trial, the first of its kind, the 46-year-old also alleged that Monsanto had failed to warn him of the risks of using its product. Johnson developed Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma after using RoundUp during the time he was a groundskeeper for the Benicia City School District.
Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, filed an appeal of the verdict, which said the company was responsible for “negligent failure”, knew or should have known that its product was “dangerous”, and had “acted with malice or oppression”. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos had the power to overturn the original ruling, even though 12 jurors unanimously agreed that Monsanto’s product caused Mr. Johnson’s cancer and that they knew it caused cancer. Judge Bolanos had indicated last week that she might grant a new trial, which we feel would have been a complete negation of democracy. Many of the jurors wrote letters to the Judge asking her to let the verdict stand and to deny Monsanto a new trial.
On Monday, October 22, Judge Bolanas ultimately denied Monsanto’s request for a new trial. However, she ruled to reduce punitive damages from $250 million to $39 million. Bottom line, Monsanto knew their product, RoundUp and other glyphosate-containing herbicides causes cancer. There will be no new trial in this case as long as the plaintiff agrees to this lesser amount in punitive damages. Now the 8,700 cases filed against Monsanto by plaintiffs alleging their non-Hodgkins Lymphoma was caused by glyphosate (active ingredient in RoundUp) can move forward. We feel it is accountability time and time to get glyphosate banned.
More Good News
Also in the news, a new study just came out that showed eating organic food can reduce your risk of getting blood cancer by 86%. The biggest impact was seen on Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma risk, which plummeted among those who shunned chemical-sprayed food, according to the survey of nearly 70,000 French adults.
Overall, organic eaters were 25 percent less likely to develop any cancer, and their risks of skin and breast cancers dropped by a third.
Of course we knew this but it is great to see mainstream media reporting on this!
