This week we spoke with Manny Garcia, co-owner and general counsel of Sage Mountain Farm. Phil Noble and his wife, Juana are the other co-owners and farmers. Sage Mountain Farm was just recently named to the Food as Nutrition Innovation Council, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. Tufts University, and undertaking Food as Medicine food system project with Tufts.

Manny shared with us how he an others are working on this project to change policy on how we address health and nutrition in this country. This collaboration with Tufts, where studies have and are being done on food and nutrition is an important part of this undertaking. Never has it been more important to have a healthy immune system as it is right now. Manny talked about what this could mean for shifting the current paradigm to using healthy food as medicine and perhaps even having food as a prescription. Regulating GMOs Fails Again

On Saturday, May 16, we received word from the USDA about a ruling on the regulating of GMOs. Unfortunately, regulating of GMOs fails again. This ruling is beyond insane and allows GMO makers to profit even more by the poisoning of our food, water and planet.

One of the points in this ruling actually says that we, the consumers, will pay the price for GMO cross-contamination of organic foods–no liability for the GMO farmer. There is zero consideration for our organic farmers and yet the GMO farmers are subsidized by our tax dollars. This ruling is actually a gift to private corporatons that make the GMO seeds which are mostly chemical corporations. This makes no sense nor does the fact that these chemical companies are making our food. Think about it?

We spoke today with Zen Honeycutt, Founding Executive Director of Moms Across America, about what the ruling actually means. She and others have reviewed the document and shares with us 13 points that are critical to understand. One of the points involves CRISPR technology which has to do with RNA editing and how the lack of regulation on this untested and dangerous technology may affect generations to come.

Many of us have been working on educating the public about the dangers of GMOs, and their chemical counterparts for a couple of decades and this news comes as quit a blow to all of us. That being said, we are not giving up and will continue to educate the people about what has happened with our food supply and offer advise as to what we can do about it. We strongly suggest that you start growing your own food if you can.

What’s Really In Those Plant-Based Meats?

Plant-based, vegan, fake meat, no matter what you call them, are becoming widely popular. Seems like every week there is a new product coming out and it appears that there is a huge market for them. But are they really healthy? We wanted to find out what’s really in those fake meats so that you can be informed about what you are really eating.

Plant Based Meats

Marketing leads us to believe that “plant-based” burgers consist solely of that—plants. However, the products specifically designed to mimic the texture and flavor of meat contain an extensive ingredient list that’s at odds with the better-for-you image these foods are trying to create.

We discovered that for the most part, we’re being duped into eating heavily processed food that contains numerous preservatives, additives, fillers, and chemicals linked to cancer. They’re high in sodium, and low in nutritional quality. We should NOT be told that highly processed fake foods are any better for you than the meat products they’re replacing. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or a meat eater, you need to be informed and these companies are not going to be the ones to do this.

Here’s a list of some of the ingredients that you may want to know about.

Artificial Flavor

There are over 3,000 different chemicals allowed to be used as artificial flavors for foods in the US. It is a great place to hide and ingredient like MSG. Artificial flavoring is also often the mark of low-quality processed food.

Bleached Wheat Flour

Flour is bleached using one or a combination of 20 chemicals such as benzoyl peroxide and chlorine gas, which remain in the final product in trace amounts. The process also causes a chemical breakdown of the nutrients normally found in wheat flour, like vitamin E.

Canola Oil

What is canola oil made from? It comes from the canola plant. This wild rapeseed oil contains large amounts of erucic acid, which is known to cause health problems, so the canola plant was developed from rapeseed in order to use it to produce a food-grade canola oil with lower erucic acid levels. Why is canola oil so bad for you? For three main reasons, most canola oil today can be very harmful to your body:

  1. Over 90 percent of canola oil is genetically modified.
  2. Canola oil is a refined oil that’s often partially hydrogenated to increase its stability, but this increases its negative health effects.
  3. It’s been linked to increased inflammation in animal studies, and chronic inflammation is believed to be at the root of most diseases.

Caramel Color

Caramel coloring refers to any of the four classes of caramel food coloring, two of which are associated with cancer. The manufacturing process of Class III and Class IV caramel color produces carcinogenic byproducts that can remain in the final product. Although you’d have to eat an excess of caramel coloring to consume enough of the byproduct to cause cancer, those trying to avoid synthetic ingredients should steer clear of caramel coloring.

Corn Oil

Corn oil is a heavily processed vegetable oil. To separate oil from the kernel, manufacturers often use a solvent called hexane, which is a known human neurotoxin and suspected of damaging reproductive and fetal health. Most hexane is evaporated off, but small amounts remain in the final product. Also, corn is genetically modified and RoundUp Ready (glyphosate). Chances are if you are eating corn oil you are eating glyphosate.

Cultured Dextrose

Because cultured dextrose is produced by culturing sugar with bacteria, it’s marketed as a “more natural” way to preserve, sweeten, or texturize processed food. However, cultured dextrose has been linked with numerous side effects, including upset stomach, fatigue, and increased thirst.

Dimagnesium Phosphate

Although dimagnesium phosphate is safe for healthy individuals, it can be dangerous for those with common health problems, including kidney disease, severe heart and lung disease, and thyroid problems. As an additive used to emulsify, stabilize, or provide texture, dimagnesium phosphate is inconsistent with clean eating ideology.

Disodium Guanylate

Modified food starch is treated with chemicals, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, sodium hypochlorite, or acids, in order to make the additive keep its texture better at higher temperatures. It is used to cheaply add bulk and improve the texture of processed foods.

Mycoprotein is protein from fungus. The ingredient can cause gastrointestinal distress and in some cases, life-threatening anaphylactic reactions in those who are allergic to it. The FDA does not require labels to warn of the presence of this allergen.

Salt

Too much sodium in the diet can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, especially if it is the kind in the blue box that doesn’t have the minerals that the body requires. We are not talking about salts like Celtic sea salt, Himalayan sea salt, or the ones that have many beneficial minerals in them. The average American already consumes more than twice as much table salt as recommended by the American Heart Association.

Soy Lecithin

Soy lecithin is extracted from soybeans using a solvent called hexane, which is a known human neurotoxin and suspected of damaging reproductive and fetal health. Most hexane is evaporated off, but small amounts remain in the final product. Although the European Union prohibits foods from containing more than 10 parts per million (ppm) of hexane residues, the FDA doesn’t limit hexane in processed soy, nor does it require manufacturers to monitor levels in their final product. Soy Leghemoglobin (heme)

SLH is the substance that gives the burger its meaty taste and makes it appear to bleed like meat when cut. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially refused to sign off on the safety of SLH when first approached by the company. The rat feeding study results suggest that the agency’s concerns were justified. Rats fed the genetically modified (GM) yeast-derived SLH developed unexplained changes in weight gain, changes in the blood that can indicate the onset of inflammation or kidney disease, and possible signs of anemia.

Soy Protein

Soy protein isolates, concentrates, and textured vegetable protein are made by separating soy proteins from fats. To do this, many manufacturers bathe soybean flakes in a solvent called hexane, which is a known human neurotoxin and suspected of damaging reproductive and fetal health. Most hexane is evaporated off, but small amounts remain in the final product.

Although the European Union prohibits foods from containing more than 10 parts per million (ppm) of hexane residues, the FDA doesn’t limit hexane in processed soy, nor does it require manufacturers to monitor levels in their final product. Independent testing has found 50 ppm hexane in U.S. food products — more than five times Europe’s safety threshold!

Sugar

Regardless of whether added sugar comes from sugar cane, beets, corn, or another source, diets high in added sugar increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, obesity and more. Added sugars are also addictive, and should be avoided wherever possible. Words ending in -ose (dextrose, maltose, glucose) often indicate added sugar. Titanium dioxide is the most common whitening and brightening additive used to make food, paint, cosmetics, and even sunscreen. There is some evidence that eating foods containing small nanoparticles of titanium dioxide can harm the digestive tract and induce toxic effects in the brain.

EPA’s Decision: A Corporate Takeover

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released in a statement Thursday that they have finished their regulatory review and found that glyphosate is not a carcinogen. In their statement released Thursday, the agency said “EPA has concluded that there is no risk of concern to human health when glyphosate is used according to the label and that it is not a carcinogen.” Given the mounds of evidence that says otherwise, we consider the EPA’s decision: a corporate takeover by Monsanto/Bayer. We cannot trust this agency to protect us from these toxins! It’s up to us!

Dr. Stephanie Seneff: It’s the Glyphosate

Dr. Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT. She has been studying glyphosate for 13 years and is one of the leading experts studying this herbicide. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in RoundUp and is the most widely used herbicide in the world. There are currently over 42,000 lawsuits against its maker, Bayer/Monsanto. Today we spoke with Dr. Seneff about some of the latest findings. She spoke about how glyphosate can affect our organs, the microbiome and our overall body chemistry. We know many diseases like autism, diabetes, cancers, and neurological diseases are on the rise. Dr. Stephanie Seneff is convinced, it’s the glyphosate.

She explains the mechanisms of how glyphosate reacts in our body and how it can wreak havoc with many different organs, including the liver, kidneys and how it disrupts many of the functions in our body. She also speaks about how glyphosate makes cells more susceptible to breast cancer.

Glyphosate Can Alter DNA

Two new studies add to the body of science, showing glyphosate— a key ingredient in Bayer/Monsanto’s herbicide RoundUp, is harmful to living systems. The studies point to convincing evidence that glyphosate can alter DNA by actively working at the epigentic level.

The studies strongly suggest glyphosate is affecting human chemistry at the genetic level to turn on negative, disease-causing traits – even into future generations. These new studies indicate glyphosate progressively weakens the genome of living systems exposed to the chemical. It increases susceptibility to health problems and increased infertility. 

These discoveries come from a collaboration of scientists from Purdue University and the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM)/Institut de Cancérologie de L’Ouest (ICO) in Nantes, France. Together, they found glyphosate can lead to mammary cancer when combined with another risk factor. Their work was published in Frontiers in Genetics and shows that glyphosate primes mammary cells for tumor growth by reprogramming epigenomes. 

“This is a major result and nobody has ever shown this before,” says Sophie Lelièvre, a professor of cancer pharmacology at Purdue’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “Showing that glyphosate can trigger tumor growth, when combined with another frequently observed risk, is an important missing link when it comes to determining what causes cancer.”

What other frequently observed risks propelled breast cancer growth?

Breast Cancer and RoundUp

It is assumed that only 5–10% of cancers are directly caused by inherited genetic abnormalities. The remaining 90% of cancers are linked to environmental factors that directly or indirectly affect DNA.

The researchers discuss environmental and lifestyle factors as other “oncogenic hits,” including diet, tobacco, infections, obesity, alcohol, radiation, stress, physical activity, exposure to heavy metals, and other pollutants.  

Therefore, glyphosate is one “oncogenic hit” that, combined with another oncogenic hit, promotes the development of mammary tumors. A+B=C(ancer)!

For the study, scientists exposed noncancerous human mammary epithelial cells to glyphosate in vitro over a course of 21 days. The cells were placed in mice to assess tumor formation. Although cells exposed to glyphosate alone did not induce tumor growth, cancerous tumors did develop after glyphosate was combined with molecules that were linked to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a chemical reaction that occurs as a result of aging, diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, or other stressors. It alters the organization and integrity of the genome of the breast, aiding cancer development.

What was particularly alarming about the tumor growth was that it wasn’t the usual type of breast cancer we see in older women,” Lelièvre said. “It was the more aggressive form found in younger women, also known as luminal B cancer.

ANOTHER CONCERNING STUDY

Another first-of-its-kind study from Washington State University exposed pregnant rats to just half the rate of the commonly used herbicide Roundup that is considered safe for exposure. Researchers found that roughly 90 percent of the next two generations developed health problems by the time they were one year old, including kidney disease, obesity, or issues with their ovaries, testicles, or prostate. 

The most dramatic finding, says WSU professor of biological sciences Michael Skinner, showed about one-third of the future generations had miscarriages and/or died during pregnancy.

It’s not just a decision of our own right now to say, ‘I don’t mind being exposed to this,‘” Skinner says. “If those have effects generations down the line, we have a responsibility to our future generations.

The WSU study builds on findings of a 2018 study that looked at glyphosate exposure in U.S. pregnant women, using urine samples as the measure of exposure. Published in the journal Environmental Health, the authors concluded, “We found that > 90% of pregnant women had detectable glyphosate levels and that these levels correlated significantly with shortened pregnancy lengths.

Termed “Epigenetic Transgenerational Inheritance of Adult-Onset Disease,” the findings add yet another layer of evidence why countries like the U.S., who haven’t announced outright bans on the product, should reconsider their policy. 

A STRONGER CASE TO BAN GLYPHOSATE

Currently, 17 countries have issued outright bans on glyphosate as global favor rapidly turns against the product and its manufacturer Bayer AG-Monsanto.

With the Environmental Protection Agency unwilling to budge on setting stricter limits or considering a ban on glyphosate in the U.S., people must take individual action to avoid exposure. Costco has pulled Roundup from its shelves due to public pressure (and perhaps sensing that future lawsuits may involve retailers). Lowes and Walmart are now named in legal action due to their unwillingness to drop the product from their stores. 

LAWSUITS AND EVIDENCE

Meanwhile, Bayer AG has lost three high-profile cases against its Roundup product, causing the company to lose investor confidence, stock price, and public favor. The highly anticipated, upcoming ‘Winston lawsuit’ held in Monsanto’s backyard of St. Louis is set for October 15 as Bayer AG-Monsanto desperately attempts to delay and block the trial’s start

The Winston lawsuit, filed in March of 2018, would be the first trial to take place in the St. Louis area. Two trials that had been set to start in St. Louis in August and September have been delayed, as reported by food industry watchdog, U.S. Right To Know.

USRTK.org writes, “The plaintiffs in the Winston case are among more than 18,000 people in the United States suing Monsanto claiming that exposure to the company’s glyphosate-based herbicides caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma and that Monsanto hid the risks associated with its weed killers.

Duane Lee Johnson and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Judge Vince Chhabria presided over the San Francisco federal court case in which a civil jury awarded California’s Edwin Hardeman $80 million on evidence that Roundup was a substantial factor in causing his non-Hodgkin’s lymphona. In that case, Judge Chhabria wrote the following conclusion:

There is strong evidence from which a jury could conclude that Monsanto does not particularly care whether its product is in fact giving people cancer, focusing instead on manipulating public opinion and undermining anyone who raises genuine and legitimate concerns about the issue.”
