Dr. Stephanie Seneff: The Glyphosate (RoundUp) Autism Connection
Dr. Stephanie Seneff, Senior Research Scientist at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, predicts that by the year 2025 that half the children born will be diagnosed with Autism. Today, Food Integrity Now, talked with Dr. Seneff about the reasons why she believes that aluminum accumulation in the brain, synergistically promoted by Glyphosate (RoundUp), is the principal cause of Autism in the U.S.
Dr. Seneff shared her research as to the biological effects of Glyphosate in combination with aluminum and mercury and how these combinations affect the body and more importantly the brain. Aluminum is an adjuvant in vaccines that makes the vaccine more powerful. Mercury is used in about 50% of the flu vaccines. When combined with Glyphosate in the body, the results are staggeringly toxic. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUP, is not only used heavily on GMO crops but also on many conventional crops like wheat, barley and sorghum, to name a few. Her scientific findings as to how Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the world, works in conjunctions with these heavy metals is conclusive. These findings point to causation of many of the neurological diseases that are increasing in this country like Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson, Autism, Schizophrenia, and others.
She shared how Glyphosate works in our gut and how this mineral chelator binds some of our most important minerals that are needed for healthy gut bacteria. Dr. Seneff spoke about how vitamin D is depleted by Glyphosate and how this also correlates as to causation in Autism. She has written many peer-reviewed papers that are available here for your review.
Dr. Seneff has devoted many years to studying Autism and the environmental causes and has found that Glyphosate, which has been used since 1975, but is now more widely used, is a key factor in the rise of Autism in this country.

While I find this article interesting and informative, the postulated link between aluminum + glyphosate and autism fails to explain the gender bias ratio of males to females among those diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, which is on the order of 3:1 to 15:1 depending upon the population sample studied and averages in the 4 to 6 range in samples that span the period of time from the early 1990s through the mid-2000s.
Based on the understood science concerning the candidate toxicants (e.g.,Thimerosal and aluminum adjuvants) and toxins (e.g., human DNA/DNA fragments, residual recombinant DNA/DNA fragments from the genetically engineered vaccines, and live viruses [principally, those in the MMR-containing vaccines]), only Thimerosal, an inorganic mercury compound that is putatively toxic to developing humans at levels below 10 ng/kg, has the property that, at all levels of toxicity, intrinsically causes more damage to males than females.
If Dr. Seneff has studies that show a similar gender-bias effect for aluminum + glyphosate, please let her share them with us.
Dr. Seneff’s reply:
1) Glyphosate disrupts CYP enzymes (see attached paper, Figure 1), and aromatase is a CYP enzyme. Aromatase converts testosterone to estrogen, and its defective activity impacts boys much more than girls.
2) Also, glyphosate suppresses glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), which plays an incredibly important role in red blood cells to protect them from hemolysis. Anemia is strongly associated with autism, a reflection of hemorrhagic red blood cells. Jaundice is also a consequence of hemolysis, and jaundice at birth is a risk factor for autism. I an explain why anemia leads to brain dysfunction – it has to do with low oxygen bioavailability to the brain. Genetic defects in G6PD are very common (it’s the most common genetic disorder among humans). It’s an x-linked gene, meaning that girls have two copies but boys have only one. So boys are much more likely to have a genetically defective G6PD gene that will be further impacted by glyphosate’s effect in suppressing its activity.
I don’t have a good explanation for gender bias for aluminum, but certainly I do for glyphosate!
I also believe that thimerosal is causal in autism. Mercury is a very nasty toxicant.
Dear Dr. Seneff,
While your points are well-taken, the M/F ratio cases issue in autism has been a reality since the the original cases were identified in the 1940s and 1950s (before Roundup [glphosate]) and Thimerosal has been shown to adversely affect the enzymatic pathways you mentioned.
Thus, while glyphosate’s adverse effects may be contributory to the observed M/F ratios in “autism”, they cannot be the primary causal factor because this factor existed before glyphosate (Roundup) was being used in commercial agriculture (in the 1980s).
Moreover, if you carefully read the paper, “Geier DA, Hooker BS, Kern JK, King PG, Sykes LK, Geier MR. A two-phase study evaluating the relationship between Thimerosal-containing vaccine administration and the risk for an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis in the United States. Translational Neurodegeneration 2013 Dec. 16; 2:25 (12 pages). [http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/2047-9158-2-25.pdf.] “, you should see that, in the first phase, a study in VAERS, though the “autism” risk was significantly less [in a comparison of the reported adverse events for a Thimerosal-preserved DTaP vaccine and a no-Thimerosal, 2-phenoxyethanol-preserved DTaP vaccine given during the same period] for the no-Thimerosal vaccine even though the nominal aluminum level in the 2-phenoxyethanol-preserved vaccine was more than twice the level in the Thimerosal-preserved vaccine — indicating that, in this instance, increasing the aluminum level did not appear to increase the risk of a subsequent “autism” diagnosis.
Furthermore, other examinations of the trend in “ASD” diagnoses seems to indicates that the risk of an “autism” diagnosis seems to be declining in the USA after 2002, if nor earlier, even with the CDC’s efforts to conceal this decline by adding Thimerosal-preserved inactivated-influenza vaccines that, without any real proof of safety, it allows to be given to pregnant women(since 1997 when all doses were Thimerosal-preserved doses) and young children (6 months to 23 months of age) starting in 2002 when most all doses were also Thimerosal-preserved doses — and more than 50% of the doses that can be given to pregnant women and children under two years of age still are Thimerosal-preserved doses.
In addition, the CDC’s surveys of 8-year-olds in some states the USA cannot be trusted because different States, different regions in the states that appear more than once and defective survey assessment procedures were used. [Note: The last survey of which I am aware covered children born when the early childhood vaccine doses were still mostly Thimerosal-preserved.]
Moreover, though glyphosate may be a contributing factor and, for many adverse health conditions, aluminum may be a contributing factor and “glyphosate + aluminum” may be worse, please remember that Thimerosal is much more than a neurotoxin and that its adverse effects extend to the gastrointestinal system, the immune system, etc. as well as to the genome since it seems to be a multigenerational teratogen (Goncharuk GA. Experimental investigation of the effect of organomercury pesticides on generative functions and on progeny. Hyg Sanit. 1971; 36: 40-43).
Perhaps, when all use of Thimerosal is banned from medicine, we may be able to begin to assign the causal factors for the residual “ASD” (as redefined by DSM 5) cases and, perhaps, glyphosate or “glyphosate + aluminum” will be major causal factors for those cases.
However,at present, when it comes to “regressive autism”, childhood exposures to Thimerosal from before birth and afterward seem to have been the major causal factor and the one possible factor that the Establishment has done everything, including falsifying studies, denying the studies showing a causal linkage exist, and discrediting the researchers with false accusations and extra-legal actions, to conceal.
Since, by this time, the Establishment knows that chronic disease is the goal because it produces the greatest profits and the easiest control over the population, perhaps glyphosate was introduced as Thimerosal’s replacement (just as Thimerosal was Calomel’s replacement) when/if public pressure finally makes it untenable to continue to allow Thimerosal’s use in in medicine the USA (and worldwide).
From my point of view, all use of glyphosate and most other biocides should be banned and best organic farming practices should be reestablished as the only permissible commercial agricultural practices.

I don’t agree with some of his points, such as the “risk of ASD seems to be declining since 2002” (How can he possibly think that?) and also the point about autism before 1980 and thimerosal – because autism rates were extremely low during that time. However I do agree with him that mercury is a potent neurotoxin and does not belong in any vaccine.
As a soil consultant – the problem gets worse. The majority of soil testing today relies on acid testing and ph which fails to show the available calcium in the soil and we see deficiencies across the country. The EPA has forced the removal of Sulfur from diesel fuel to combat acid rain. Sulfur ties up Aluminum and renders it not toxic in our crops – we are seeing deficiencies in Sulfur and increases in Aluminum in the soil.

drking33 is also missing the recent and growing body of research connecting aluminum to virtually all those conditions to which he connects thimerosal. It is now known that aluminum is causative in immune disorders and autoimmune disease, in gastrointestinal conditions, in brain dysfunction, brain cell death, cancer and yes, some scientists believe in autism. Research today leaves no room to conclude that aluminum is anything other than a potent neurotoxin. drking33 need only look at the science presented at the International Congresses on Autoimmunity in recent years to review this for himself.
