The Mind-Gut Connection: Are you listening?
There is much information coming forth regarding the microbiome (our gut) and its intimate relationship with the brain. We now understand that there are at least 10 Trillion microbes that live with us. Some doctors are starting to more fully understand the communication that happens between the brain and gut, although many doctors still do not even recognize this correlation.
Emeran Mayer, M.D., has been studying this mind-gut communication for years and has recently written a very comprehensive book, The Mind-Gut Connection: How Hidden Conversation Within Our Bodies Impacts Our Mood, Our Choices, and our Overall Health. He shared with me today some of his findings (listen here) and the importance of understanding that communication–especially as it relates to understanding gut feelings, disease, mental health and our overall well-being.
In this fascinating interview, Dr. Mayer explains how this communication takes place, the importance of understanding our gut feelings, how our genetics affect this communication, childhood trauma and stress, leaky gut and what the standard American diet’s role is in the creation of disease.
