The Monsanto Papers
Food Integrity Now spoke with Carey Gillam about her new book, The Monsanto Papers, Deadly Secrets, Corporate Corruption, and One Man’s Search for Justice. The book tells the inside story of Lee Johnson’s landmark lawsuit against Monsanto after a workplace accident left Lee doused in Monsanto’s widely used herbicide, Roundup, and facing a deadly cancer.
Lee Johnson was the first person to take Monsanto to trial in the case DeWayne Johnson v. Monsanto. This case gathered attention from around the world and became one of the most dramatic legal battle in courthouse history. To Lee, whose doctors claimed he may not survive long enough to take the stand, this was a race against time. In her book, Gillam tells a very personal story of what it was like for Lee and his family before and during the trial as he struggled with constant pain due to his cancer and chemotherapy.
Carey Gillam’s first book, Whitewash: The Story of a Weedkiller, Cancer and the Corruption of Science, which was an expose’ on Monsanto and it’s deception to cover up the health risk of Roundup, was eye opening as well. Listen to that interview here.
The Monsanto Papers, tells more of a personal story of one man’s fight for his life and justice. It takes us behind the scenes of the legal process which is eye opening to say the least. Gillam writes about the legal and tort process which is very interesting, a page turner and a legal thriller! She talks about the colorful and eclectic band of lawyers representing Lee and how taking on Monsanto was a matter of professional pride that placed millions of dollars and their reputations on the line. Lee’s battle with Monsanto brought to light years, and even decades, of deceptive conduct by Monsanto and our regulators that created worldwide public health implications. The Monsanto Papers uncovers an overwhelming amount of evidence on just how far Monsanto went to cover up the truth about their deadly weedkiller. At the heart of this story, however, is Lee Johnson and his tormented battle to survive long enough to see his day in court. Lee was able to testify and this landmark settlement may never have happened without Lee. This is truly a David vs. Goliath story!
You will be astounded by what was uncovered during this trial and how far Monsanto was willing to go to hide the dangers of their weedkiller, including collusion with the EPA, underminding scientists, ghostwriting the science, and more.
