WHITEWASH, The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science

Since the mid-1990’s, there has been a debate in the United States and abroad about the safety of genetically engineered crops–for humans, the environment and for animals.  At Food Integrity Now we have covered this through many articles and interviews over the past 7-1/2 years. This week, I interviewed Carey Gillam, (interview here) veteran investigative journalist of more than 25 years about her new book, Whitewash. Gillam spoke with us today and shared some of the information she has discovered and uncovered about our use of genetically engineered crops and their accompanying weed killer, Glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup).

In the intro of the book, she writes:

“From the day genetically engineered crops were introduced, they were designed with one primary purpose in mind–to withstand treatments of glyphosate, the highly efficient and effective week killer owned by Monsanto Co. and sold as Roundup. Farmers using the “Roundup Ready” seeds along with the Roundup could knock weeks out of their fields without worrying about killing their crops. Then and now, most of the GMO crops grown in the world carry the glyphosate-tolerant trait enabling and encouraging farmers to choose to use this herbicide over any other on their farm fields. It was a brilliant move by Monsanto Co. and made the company billions of dollars in combined sales of seeds and herbicide. But it has cost the rest of us, and generations yet to com, in ways impossible to calculate.”

Gillam shared some of the information she has uncovered through her years of investigating the agrichemical industry, including Monsanto Co., one of the largest chemical companies in the world. She spoke about the EPA and their collusion with the chemical industry. She shared stories of human tragedy that are connected to the use of Glyphosate in this country and abroad. It’s hard to decide which story is more tragic, the farmers who relied on Monsanto’s assertion that Glyphosate was safe to use, the potential correlation between cancer and birth defects in Argentina, the decline of our Monarch butterflies due to the spraying of harmful chemicals, or the overall corruption of our government agencies who have been bought by the multi-billion dollar chemical industry.

She spoke about the World Health Organization’s branch, IARC (International Association for Research on Cancer), which declared Glyphosate as a  “probable carcinogen” in 2015 and the ensuing events that occurred after that declaration–which will probably make your blood boil!

In her book, Gillam shared much information that may be alarming to you. However, she explained that she hoped Whitewash would wake people up and make them aware of the food they are eating and the environment. She offers solutions in the last chapter as to what we can do now to not only become aware but to take action to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
