Dr. Austin Perlmutter: Brain Wash

When was the last time you felt truly happy, fulfilled, clear-minded, well rested, and deeply connected–not only to yourself but also to the people and world around you? Food Integrity Now spoke with Dr. Austin Perlmutter, co-author with Dr. David Perlmutter, about their New York Times best selling book: Brain Wash: Detox Your Mind for Clearer Thinking, Deeper Relationships, and Lasting Happiness.

Brain Wash

Brain Wash is a functional roadmap for understanding how aspects of the modern world influence our brains and decision-making. It provides a framework for appreciation of the negative impact of these exposures, then offering a set of practical interventions. These interventions can allow us to reclaim our brains and improve our physical, mental and emotion health.

Some of the culprits that can negatively affect our brain’s prefrontal cortex (associated with our ability to feel empathy and decision making) and amygdala (which plays an important role in our emotions and behavior and is best known for its role in the processing of fear).

Bad News

Multiple factors contribute to our epidemics of anxiety, depression, obesity, chronic disease and loneliness, but one factor at play is that we are trapped in a spiral of impulsive, short-term unhealthy decisions. But, if we want to live lives of joy, purpose and health, we must make the break now.

Dr. Perlmutter shares how chronic stress, sleep deficit, excessive screen time, and inflammation all exacerbate these issues. The good news is we can change our brains. We can introduce practical methods of reducing these insults to our brains, by understanding the recent research on the health benefits of being in nature, exercising, eating an anti-inflammatory diet, meditation, sleeping well, practicing empathy, and turning off the news that can assist in rewiring our brain. The brain is pliable, impressionable and moldable.

Scientist are looking for new ways to build BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor). We now know you can increase your BDNF through lifestyle choices. The Brain Wash program includes strategies to increase your BDNF so you can change your brain. Our brains are constantly changing in response to our environment–this is happening every day–largely without our knowledge or conscious intervention.

Dr. Austin Perlmutter

Dr. Perlmutter explains the “disconnection syndrome” and what some of the symptoms are to having it, including mindless activity, loneliness, impulsivity, chronic stress, chronic inflammation, poor relationships, narcissism, and instant gratification.

He offers pragmatic interventions that we need to do now if we want to reclaim our brains and live a healthy and happy life.
