Monsanto/Bayer: Is it going down?

It’s all over the news! Finally! After less than two full days of deliberations, a California jury ordered Monsanto/Bayer to pay just over $2 billion in punitive and compensatory damages to a married couple who both developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma they say was caused by their many years of using glyphosate-based Roundup products. This is the third trial against Monsanto/Bayer and their weedkiller, Roundup. The first plaintiff, Johnson, was awarded $79 Million. The second plaintiff, Hardeman, was awarded $80 million. Currently, there are over 13,000 cases in line against Monsanto/Bayer’s Roundup, all of them alleging it caused their cancer.

Bayer’s stock is plummeting and their shareholders and directors are not happy! Not a good investment Bayer!

In the most recent trial, Pilliod v. Monsanto, for the punitive damages, the jury had to find that Monsanto “engaged in conduct with malice, oppression or fraud committed by one or more officers, directors or managing agents of Monsanto”  who were acting on behalf of the company. The plaintiffs’ attorney showed compelling evidence that Monsanto knew for years that their weedkiller caused cancer and covered it up.

These cases send a clear message to Bayer/Monsanto, that the people will not tolerate being poisoned any longer by Roundup.

However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just recently posted their proposed interim registration review decision and will most likely register glyphosate for another 15 years! The EPA classifies glyphosate as not likely to be carcinogenic while the International Agency for Research on Cancer (art of the World Health Organization, classifies it as “probably carcinogenic.” Isn’t there enough evidence already? One would think so but there is much involved here.

Just this week, A Moose Jaw, Sask., farmer who was diagnosed with cancer five years ago is leading a class action lawsuit against Bayer and Monsanto. The lawsuit, filed in Saskatchewan, contends that exposure to Roundup herbicide contributed to his cancer and the cancer of other Canadians participating in the class action. The suit claims Monsanto, which Bayer acquired in 2018, withheld information about the safety of its herbicide. My guess is that this is lawsuit is going to cost Bayer/Monsanto a lot of money.

Alva and Alberta Pilliod

Bayer will be appealing the latest case, Pilliod v. Monsanto and the $2 Billion award to the Pilliods, and it seems likely that the $2 Billion will be somewhat reduced. However, the fact remains that Bayer/Monsanto will be tied up in legal battles for some time. Can these lawsuits bankrupt this huge corporation? Bayer Corporation’s net worth is over $141 Billion. Will its stockholders protest enough to cause this multi-billion-dollar corporation to make a different choice? Will they consider reducing their liability by discontinuing the sale of Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides? Keep in mind glyphosate-based herbicides are the most widely sold and used herbicides in the world. Glyphosate has been found in our food, water, soil, wine, beer, liquor, and even breast milk. Has a can of worms been opened? How much could they be liable for? How willing are they to defend their products? All of these questions and more are yet to be answered.

My biggest question is why did Bayer even buy Monsanto? They must have known or seen the handwriting on the wall about Roundup when they purchased Monsanto. Why buy a company with such a negative reputation?

We now know that Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides cause cancer. We also know that Monsanto knew this many years and covered it up. Isn’t this a crime against humanity?

I don’t have the answer to these questions but I guarantee you there is an agenda, and it is not one that supports human health. If you aren’t already doing so, eat organic. Do not support these corporations by buying any of their products or the many foods that contain glyphosate. Keep in mind that almost all GMO foods contain glyphosate. We vote with our dollars. Support your local and organic farmers. They need us and we need them!

What is the real agenda of Bayer buying Monsanto? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Please add your comments below. In the meantime, people are being harmed by this product and the lawsuits will continue. It is accountability time for this corporation—enough is enough!
