For the past 40 years, conventional farmers have been using chemical herbicides to kill weeds in their fields. It was touted as being easier on the farmer and the environment than the more traditional methods of tilling. Today, scientists are facing the grim reality that this chemical shortcut has now created a problem much larger than ever foreseen.

In this series on growing your own food in harmony with nature, Evan Folds has been teaching us the immense importance of microbiological activity in our soils. In this segment, Evan walks us through the making and application of compost teas. These teas boost the viability of compost and can automatically take care of many pest or nutrient imbalance issues you are having in your garden. It’s very easy too! If you aren’t using compost tea, you are missing out on something great for your garden.

There is an impending food shortage crisis, and the ambassadors for biotechnology are eager to provide a solution. The claim is that genetically engineered crops produce higher yields. There is controversy over the genetic manipulation of crops on a multitude of points, but most agree that an answer to the need of a growing population must be found. The conditions of starvation and malnutrition that exist in parts of the world are pointed to as the future for all unless it is addressed. So let’s look at the reasons behind these food shortages more closely.

Why are our honeybees vanishing in alarming numbers?  Food Integrity Now talked with co-directors, Maryam Henein and George Langworthy, about their recent film, Vanishing Of The Bees. This documentary takes a piercing investigative look at the economic, political and ecological implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee. Henein and Langworthy discuss our current agricultural landscape and celebrates the ancient and sacred connection between man and the honeybee. The story highlights the positive changes that have resulted due to the tragic phenomenon known as “Colony Collapse Disorder.” Their movie unfolds as a dramatic tale of science and mystery. Henein is passionate about this extraordinary crisis and its greater meaning about the relationship between humankind and Mother Earth. The bees have a message – but will we listen.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted emergency approval for the use of the neonicotinoid pesticide dinotefuran to control brown marmorated stink bugs in seven eastern states. Dinotefuran is a member of the neonicotinoid family of systemic pesticides that is known to be highly toxic to bees and associated with Colony Collapse Disorder.

SWAT type raids with guns aimed at unarmed families on small dairy farms? Confiscation of product and equipment with no proof of contamination, and no compensation for damage and loss? Is it because these dairy farms are just covers for drug operations or weapons stockpiling? Nope. They only produce raw milk. Uh-huh, a food that humanity has been consuming for hundreds of years before pasturization. Whoa now! better bring in the guns, this is dangerous! Or…could it be dangerous to one of the mythologies that industrialized large scale food production is built on? It’s the idea that food in it’s natural state is poisonous, and we must be protected from it. What if more people started drinking raw milk and experienced the health benefits? What, then, might happen to factory style dairy operations? Hmmmm.
